The Pack is back: Panel of former NFL players and coaches say Green Bay is the team to beat
(Wed, 08 Sep 2010 12:08:00 PDT)
While Sporting News Today officially picked the New York Jets over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl 45, a panel of former NFL coaches and players has other ideas. The Green Bay Packers lead the pack as the team picked to win it all in 2010, with the Baltimore Ravens as a close-second favorite. Brian Baldinger, former offensive lineman: "Packers over Ravens. I think Aaron Rodgers and that offense is the best in football and will carry them start to finish all year, much like Drew Brees did with the Saints a year ago." Steve Beuerlein, former QB:...
NFL division races: NFC North
(Wed, 08 Sep 2010 07:24:00 PDT)
A look at the strengths, weaknesses, rehab issues and what to expect in the NFC North, as provided by SN's NFL correspondents: Green Bay Packers The strength: Few teams will be able to match the team's offense. QB Aaron Rodgers will have better protection, which means he'll have more time to find a deep receiving group. The running game will be used when opponents start dropping too many guys into coverage. The weakness: There just aren't enough quality cornerbacks.
Week 1 matchup: Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles
(Tue, 07 Sep 2010 22:52:00 PDT)
Three story lines Mirror images? Eagles QB Kevin Kolb is hoping to emerge the same way his game counterpart, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, has. Rodgers, who replaced icon Brett Favre in Green Bay, has fast become a top-five quarterback. The jury’s out on Kolb, who replaced fixture Donovan McNabb. Kolb can’t match Rodgers’ arm strength but shares similar athleticism and accuracy. Offense doesn’t rest: Don’t be surprised if some crooked numbers appear on the scoreboard.
Packers Team Report
(Tue, 07 Sep 2010 19:15:43 PDT)
The Packers will carry an air of supreme confidence into the season.
Open talk and even printed T-shirts compliments of linebacker Nick Barnett that expressed the Super Bowl aspirations harbored by the team at the start of training camp in late July was backed up by what was accomplished on the field the ensuing five weeks.
The Aaron Rodgers-led offense took center stage, running the defenses of the Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts ragged in the first three preseason games. With yards through the air and points aplenty for the starting group, plenty of people have taken notice, including those of an influential ilk. "He had a really good year last year and has a lot of weapons," Colts quarterback Peyton Manning said of Rodgers, who threw...

(Tue, 07 Sep 2010 06:30:00 PDT)
Two weeks after they signed him in a desperation move, the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday cut wide receiver Javon Walker. The move could be a signal the Vikings will pursue another wideout, possibly free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Walker was among Vikings cuts as they and all NFL teams pushed toward the NFL's 53-player roster limit. Also cut Saturday were wide receiver Logan Payne, return man Darius Reynaud and kicker Rhys Lloyd, SN Vikings correspondent Mark Craig reports.
