The bar has been raised for Colorado right wing Chris Stewart in more ways than one.
The 22-year-old forward looked like a first-round bust early last season, when he was shipped to the minors for lackluster play in the eyes of first-year Avalanche coach Joe Sacco. Stewart had one assist in his first four games with Colorado and was a healthy scratch for the next four contests.
But because of a rash of injuries to the Avalanche's stable of forwards, Stewart was recalled after only a couple of days, and he rebounded with a career year. Stewart, a 6-foot-2, 228-pound power forward, finished with a team-leading 28 goals in 77 games. He had 64 points, 73 penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating.

Look for a Sept. 15 announcement giving the Ottawa Senators the 2012 All-Star Game. Commissioner Gary Bettman will be in Canada's capital that day for a luncheon. Also expected to attend, the Ottawa Sun reports, is Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who reportedly was promised an All-Star weekend after the 2008 draft. The festivities would be in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Senators' return to the NHL. ... Free-agent forward Ryan Potulny landed a gig for next season, as the Chicago Tribune reports he signed with the Blackhawks.

One down, one to go: The Colorado Avalanche signed restricted free agent Chris Stewart on Thursday and now turn their sights on Peter Mueller, their last major unsigned player. Both forwards are part of the team's youth movement and are 22. Stewart will be paid $2.5 million next season and $3.25 million in 2011-12, the Denver Post reports. He made $850,000 last season in the final year of his entry-level contract. The Avalanche have made it a priority to lock up-and-coming players into contracts.
