The Bruins were still looking for ways to create salary cap space as the summer wore on.
The signing of newly acquired center Greg Campbell to a two-year contract left the B's less than $1 million away from next year's salary cap, and top draft pick Tyler Seguin had $900,000 coming in his rookie contract. The club also had restricted free agent Blake Wheeler ($2.825 million last year) headed for a July 27 arbitration hearing. In other words, people had to be moved to just get the club under the $59.4 million cap for the new season. The Bruins were still shopping center Marc Savard and goalie Tim Thomas. Savard, part of a crowded depth chart at center, was still the better bet to move with Thomas coming off hip surgery and lugging a hefty price tag. ...

The Boston Bruins have re-signed defenseman Mark Stuart to a one-year contract. Stuart had two goals and five assists in 56 games for the Bruins last year before being sidelined by a broken left pinky finger that later became infected. He had career highs of five goals and 12 assists in the previous season when he played in all 82 regular-season games.

The second pick of last month's NHL draft and a linchpin of the Boston Bruins effort to build their anemic offense took it all with a smile.
