The Rangers' co-tenants at Madison Square Garden, the NBA's Knicks, couldn't convince the King—LeBron James—to come to Broadway.
Sports fans in The Big Apple might have hoped that the Rangers could find room under the salary cap to lavish a King's ransom on the NHL's premier free agent this summer, Ilya Kovalchuk.
General manager Glen Sather had discussions with the agents for Kovalchuk, but in the end, The Garden couldn't land this star, either, as Kovalchuk returned to the Devils, agreeing to a new long-term contract with them on July 19.

The Los Angeles Kings signed left wing Alexei Ponikarovsky to a one-year contract Tuesday after losing Alexander Frolov to the New York Rangers and falling short in their pursuit of Ilya Kovalchuk. The Kings gave a $3 million deal to Ponikarovsky, who scored 21 goals last season with Toronto and Pittsburgh, which acquired him in a trade last March 2.

The Rangers have acquired defenseman Matt McCue from the Anaheim Ducks for forward Tomas Zaborsky. The 22-year-old McCue spent the 2009-10 season with Manitoba of the AHL and Bakersfield of the ECHL.
